Suggested Reading Unborn Victims of Violence Act approved by the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution 5-2 (Note: Every 19th century physician knew that the child in the womb is no less alive and no less human prior to birth that he or she is after birth. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act would apply this elementary fact of modern science and medicine to federal law. This particular bill applies only to instances in which a woman and her unborn child are physically harmed by an assailant, but not to instances of procured abortion. Indeed, it would be very strange if unborn children were to be protected from abortion which is freely chosen by the mother, but not protected from forms of violent behaviour that are universally recognized as criminal in nature and are directed against both mother and child. Only a very confused person would advocate legislation that applies to the first instance but would not support legislation that applies to the second instance.) (link added August 6, 1999)
