PRESS RELEASE

January 19, 2000

People for Life will sponsor demonstrations opposing the opening of an abortion facility in Erie on Thursday, January 20, 2000 from Noon to 1:00 PM and on Saturday, January 22, 2000 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. The demonstrations will take place at the Professional Building, 1611 Peach St., Erie.

Saturday, January 22 is the 27th anniversary the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court decisions which established "abortion on demand" in the United States. The combined effect of these two decisions was to make abortion during the first six months of pregnancy-for any reason and for no reason-an absolute right, and to make abortion in the seventh, eighth, and ninth months of pregnancy an absolute right-so long as a pregnant woman and a physician state that such an abortion will improve the woman's "well-being."

"[T]medical judgment [of the abortionist] may be exercised in the light of all factors-physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age-relevant to the well-being of the patient. All these factors may relate to health. This allows the attending physician [i.e., the abortionist] the room he needs to make his best medical judgment." - Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, writing for the majority, Doe et al. v. Bolton, January 22, 1973

People for Life members are usually in Washington, DC for the March for Life on January 22. This year, however, because the 22nd falls on the weekend, the March for Life has been postponed until Monday, January 24.

People for Life President Tim Broderick stated on Wednesday, "People for Life endorses the use of all legal and peaceful means to oppose the opening of additional abortion facilities. We also endorse all legal and peaceful efforts to save innocent human lives one at a time, by exposing the realities of abortion and by offering humane alternatives. It remains abundantly clear, however, that JUSTICE will not be satisfied until Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton are reversed and the Right to Life for all innocent human individuals is once again guaranteed by the force of law."
