Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast - Saturday, January 19, 2002, 9:00 AM
Greater Erie March & Motorcade for Life - Saturday, January 19, 2002, 12:30 PM

Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast

The 24th Annual Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast will be held this Saturday at the Avalon Hotel. The breakfast is sponsored by People for Life, the Erie area affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee (Washington, DC) and the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation (Harrisburg, PA).

The breakfast (along with People for Life's annual Erie march & motorcade and our bus trip to Washington, DC for the March for Life) observes the January 22 anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade is the 1973 Supreme Court decision that prevents the American people from reestablishing legal protection for unborn children.

People for Life will be happy to provide breakfast for a reporter and a cameraperson from each of the area news departments. A table near the entrance to the Avalon Hotel ballroom will be reserved for the media.

The program will begin at 9:00 and will finish around 11:30 or 11:45.

The Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast is open to the entire community and people of all faiths. Members of the clergy from several different churches and denominations have been invited to help conduct the program.

The Christian vocal group Westbrook will perform.

A videotaped greeting from Sen. Rick Santorum will be presented.

The main speaker will be Wesley J. Smith, an attorney, author, and frequent public speaker from Oakland, California. He is the author or coauthor of eight books. Four of these were coauthored with consumer advocate Ralph Nader. Smith's most recent book, Culture of Death: The Assault on Medical Ethics in America, is a broad ranging criticism of the current trends and practices in American health care and a criticism of the philosophy of "bioethics." Bioethics is a loosely defined "profession" or "school of thought" which largely denies traditional concepts of human equality and unalienable human rights. Instead, bioethics values human beings and human lives according to subjective standards of quality and utility. Bioethics supplies the intellectual façade for such things as the denial of food and water to seriously ill patients (conscious and unconscious); the extraction of vital organs from still-living donors; assisted suicide; euthanasia; human cloning; and human genetic engineering, as well as abortion. Leading bioethicists strongly deny any distinct or compelling moral difference between human life and animal life.

Greater Erie March & Motorcade for Life

Also this Saturday, the annual Greater Erie March and Motorcade for Life will step off from 10th & State at 12:30 PM. It will circle the site of Erie's pending abortion facility and then proceed to Perry Square where it will conclude with a brief Memorial Service at the Gazebo. A Catholic priest and a Protestant minister will jointly conduct the Memorial Service, which is expected to conclude by 1:45 PM.
